About True Hourly Wage
Understanding what you truly earn per hour is the first step to making informed career and financial decisions.
What Is True Hourly Wage?
Your true hourly wage is what you actually earn per hour after accounting for every minute and every dollar your job consumes. The standard calculation, dividing your salary by 2,080 hours, is misleading because it ignores:
- Hidden time: commuting, getting ready for work, unpaid overtime, decompression time after work, mandatory social events, and unpaid lunch breaks
- Hidden costs: work meals, coffee, wardrobe and dry cleaning, commuting expenses, childcare necessitated by the office, parking, and professional memberships
- Taxes and deductions: income tax, social security, Medicare, and other mandatory deductions vary significantly by country
Our Methodology
The concept of true hourly wage is rooted in the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) community and was popularized by Vicki Robin's book "Your Money or Your Life." We've extended this framework by adding tax calculations, support for four job types, and a country-specific tax engine.
Our calculator processes inputs through five sections:
- Your Job: country, job type, salary, hours
- Tax and Deductions: auto-calculated from country-specific brackets
- Hidden Time: commute, prep, decompression, overtime, engagement, lunch
- Hidden Costs: all work-related expenses
- Benefits and Perks: employer contributions that add value
Why We Include Decompression Time
Decompression time is the period after work when you're too mentally drained to do anything productive: scrolling on your phone, watching TV you're not really watching, or zoning out. Research supports that cognitively demanding jobs can require 1 to 2 hours of daily recovery time. This is real time your job consumes even after you've left the building, and it's the most overlooked factor in salary calculators. We include it because it's a real cost of employment that affects your quality of life.
What Makes Our Tool Unique
We support all four job types (on-site, remote, hybrid, freelancing) within a single consistent framework. Our calculator combines both hidden time and hidden costs; most tools only account for one or the other. We also include tax calculations for multiple countries, a side-by-side comparison mode, and a salaried-to-freelance bridge calculator so you can seamlessly compare employment against freelancing using the same underlying framework.
Limitations
What this calculator cannot measure: the physical toll of demanding or physically intensive work, chronic mental stress and anxiety, burnout risk, career trajectory and long-term earnings growth, job security, workplace culture and psychological safety, mentorship and professional development, and personal sense of meaning or purpose. These factors are real, important, and sometimes worth accepting a lower real hourly rate for.
